Illinois Weather Alert: Tornadoes and Large Hail Threaten Joliet and Kankakee from 9 AM to 5 PM Sunday

Chicago, IL – Severe thunderstorms are expected to impact northeastern Illinois today, with the most significant threats targeting Joliet, Kankakee, and areas near and south of Interstate 55.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, two rounds of strong to severe storms are forecast between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. CDT. The first wave, expected between 9 a.m. and noon, could bring damaging winds capable of downing tree limbs and scattered small hail across a wide area. The second round, forecast between noon and 5 p.m., carries a heightened risk for larger hail up to two inches in diameter and isolated tornadoes, especially south of I-55.

The storm system is moving northeast at 50 to 60 mph. Residents in Joliet, Kankakee, and surrounding communities are urged to remain weather aware throughout the day and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

The National Weather Service has placed the region under a Level 2 to 3 severe weather threat, with wind gusts potentially reaching 75 mph. Flash flooding is not expected at this time. Safety officials recommend moving indoors at the first sign of thunder and avoiding travel during active warnings.
