Carbondale, IL – A tornado watch has been issued for parts of southern Illinois and is set to remain in effect until 12:00 a.m. CDT Thursday. Residents across 19 counties are urged to remain alert to rapidly changing weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, Tornado Watch 98 was issued Wednesday afternoon and includes the following Illinois counties: Alexander, Edwards, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, Wabash, Wayne, White, and Williamson.
The watch, which was released at 2:50 p.m. CDT, indicates the potential for developing severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail. The greatest risk window is expected through late Wednesday evening into the early morning hours.
Emergency management officials recommend that residents in the affected areas review their severe weather safety plans and have a way to receive warnings overnight, including NOAA weather radios or mobile alerts. Residents are strongly advised not to rely solely on outdoor warning sirens, especially while sleeping.
The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions evolve. If warnings are issued, residents should immediately seek shelter in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
Motorists and travelers in the region should remain cautious and check local forecasts frequently throughout the evening.
Stay with local authorities and weather outlets for the latest emergency instructions and advisories.
