Illinois starts the morning under low clouds as damp pavement and passing flurries hint at a changing pattern. Light snow showers drift through central Illinois, briefly whitening grass and rooftops before melting back into gray streets.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered snow showers may sharply reduce visibility at times today. Pockets of slippery travel are possible later this afternoon and into the evening, especially near and north of Interstate 74 where accumulating snow chances increase.

In Champaign and Urbana, rain transitions to snow showers as colder air filters in. While widespread accumulation remains unlikely, brief bursts can coat untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots. Gusty west to northwest winds increase through the day, adding a biting edge to already chilly conditions.

Drivers along I-57, I-72, and I-74 should remain alert for sudden visibility drops. Snow showers may develop quickly, then fade just as fast. Even light snow can create slick spots, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.

Temperatures peak near the upper 30s before slipping into the lower 20s tonight. As skies partially clear, colder air settles in. Wind chills drop noticeably by Sunday morning, with many locations feeling closer to ten degrees above zero.

Sunday turns brighter but colder. Sunshine returns, highs reach the mid-30s, and winds remain breezy. Conditions improve for travel, though lingering icy patches remain possible early.

The new workweek brings a short-lived warmup. Monday climbs into the low 40s under mostly sunny skies. Tuesday pushes into the low 50s before clouds increase Tuesday night. By midweek, another system brings a renewed chance for rain or snow.

For today, slow down during snow showers, dress for colder wind chills, and plan extra time if traveling later this afternoon. Winter conditions may be scattered, but they can still catch drivers off guard.
