Lincoln, IL – Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue across Central and Eastern Illinois today, with a marginal risk for severe weather developing south of I-72, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln. Rain totals between one-quarter and one-half inch are expected by this evening.

According to forecasters, the strongest storms today are most likely to occur south of I-72 and especially south of I-70, where large hail is the primary severe threat. A few storms in this zone could also produce isolated tornadoes. While the risk is limited, NWS urges residents in these southern counties to remain weather-aware through the afternoon and early evening.

Showers and storms will spread across central and southeast Illinois throughout the day before gradually tapering off late tonight. Temperatures will range from the upper 40s to near 60 degrees.

Wednesday is expected to turn dry and mild with highs in the low to upper 50s. Conditions remain quiet into early Thursday before another round of rain arrives Thursday afternoon and continues through Friday. This late-week system will bring widespread rainfall chances, though severe weather potential appears low at this time.

Dry weather is expected to return again for the weekend, with seasonable temperatures continuing into Sunday.

NWS encourages residents across Central Illinois—including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Effingham, and surrounding communities—to monitor updated forecasts and stay alert to any severe weather advisories, especially south of I-70 where isolated severe storms are most likely.
