Illinois starts the day locked in a deep winter grip as brutal cold bites across the Chicago area. Wind cuts through coats, snow drifts across open roads, and exposed skin stings within minutes during the morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures hover near 4°F in Chicago early, with wind chills plunging below zero, especially before sunrise. Gusty southwest winds near 25 to 30 mph worsen conditions and may create blowing and drifting snow, mainly south of I-80. Reduced visibility and snow-covered roadways remain possible in those areas. Drivers should slow down and allow extra stopping distance.

An Elevated Excessive Cold Risk remains in place through the morning. Frostbite can occur quickly on unprotected skin, and hypothermia risks increase for anyone spending extended time outdoors. Residents are urged to bundle up, limit exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Conditions improve slightly later today. Clouds linger, but highs climb into the mid-20s, easing the worst of the cold. Winds gradually weaken by afternoon, helping visibility improve. Even so, refreezing remains a concern on untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges.

By Tuesday, winter loosens its grip. Sunshine returns and temperatures rebound to the upper 30s, offering a noticeable break from the Arctic air. Melting snow during the day may refreeze after dark, creating patchy black ice into Wednesday morning.

Wednesday stays seasonably mild, with highs near 40°F. Attention then shifts to late week, when rain and a rain-snow mix could arrive Thursday alongside breezy conditions. While widespread snow is not expected, quick temperature swings may complicate travel.
