Chicago, Illinois – Storms and strong lake currents could create hazardous conditions across northern Illinois through Wednesday night, with a return to cooler, less humid air expected by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, decaying morning showers north of I-80 will give way to a dry but humid Tuesday, with high temperatures ranging from 86–91°F. However, chances for showers and thunderstorms will increase again late Tuesday evening into Wednesday as a cold front approaches the region.
Dangerous swimming conditions are expected to begin Wednesday afternoon and continue into the weekend due to large waves and strong currents on Lake Michigan. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of unprotected waters, especially along Chicago’s lakefront and northern shoreline communities like Evanston and Waukegan.
Storm chances peak Wednesday afternoon and evening, with rainfall probabilities between 40–60%. High temperatures will cool into the 70s statewide, with overnight lows dipping into the 60s.
Drier and more comfortable weather returns Thursday, but dangerous swim conditions are likely to persist. Friday brings more sunshine but continued caution for Lake Michigan visitors.
More updates are expected as the cold front pushes east. Warnings remain in effect for lakefront areas into Thursday.
