Chicago, Illinois – A rapid warm-up into the 70s will set the stage for thunderstorms that could turn severe across northern Illinois by late Thursday afternoon, just ahead of a sharp temperature crash.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, temperatures will climb into the upper 60s and low 70s Wednesday and surge into the 70s to near 80°F Thursday before a powerful cold front moves through the region. Thunderstorms are expected to develop by late Thursday afternoon, especially near and south of I-80, with impacts spreading into the Chicago metro during the evening.

Drivers along I-90, I-94, and I-55 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions after 4 to 5 p.m., with strong wind gusts and large hail possible in the strongest storms. Visibility may drop quickly in heavier downpours, creating hazardous travel during the evening commute.

Behind the front, temperatures will fall sharply, dropping into the 50s quickly Thursday evening and into the 40s overnight, with even cooler air near Lake Michigan. Friday will feel much colder, with highs only in the low to mid-40s.

Residents should monitor alerts Thursday afternoon, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for a fast-moving line of storms. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as the cold front approaches.
