Chicago, IL – A stretch of extreme spring weather is set to impact Illinois starting Saturday, with thunderstorms expected to escalate into a severe weather outbreak by Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, strong to severe thunderstorms are likely across much of the state late Saturday through Sunday evening. Sunday’s threat includes damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes, particularly in central and eastern Illinois. Areas such as Champaign, Bloomington, and Kankakee are currently under a Level 3 out of 5 risk level through at least 9 p.m. Sunday.
Storm chances begin Saturday evening, with showers and thunderstorms likely north of I-88, where colder air may limit storm severity. However, temperatures in the 60s and 70s statewide will fuel stronger activity by Sunday. Breezy conditions are expected to accompany the storms, adding to the risk of wind damage.
By Monday, temperatures will plummet 25 to 30 degrees, with highs only in the 40s and overnight lows dipping into the upper 20s across northern Illinois. Rain and snow showers are possible into early Tuesday.
Residents should monitor alerts, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Updates can be found at weather.gov/chicago.
