Chicago, IL – Winter isn’t done yet. A snowstorm is set to hit the Chicago area late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing strong winds, rain, and possible accumulations. The storm follows a period of high fire danger and gusty winds early in the week.
According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday will bring fire risks due to dry conditions and strong southwest winds, particularly in areas south of I-88. By Wednesday, a system will push through, bringing a 70% chance of showers and possible thunderstorms in the afternoon, followed by rapidly dropping temperatures.
Late Wednesday night, rain will transition into snow as gusty northwest winds increase. Snow will continue into Thursday morning, with accumulations of up to an inch possible. Wind gusts could exceed 40 mph, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous on major roads, including I-88 and I-55.
By Thursday afternoon, the snow will taper off, but temperatures will struggle to rise above the low 40s. Friday will bring some relief, with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s. However, another system could bring rain showers by Friday night into the weekend.
Travelers should prepare for winter driving conditions late Wednesday and Thursday. Stay updated on weather alerts and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall.
