Lincoln, Illinois – Smoky skies and rising temperatures will dominate Central Illinois through early next week as wildfire smoke from Canada settles into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a cold front this afternoon may trigger isolated showers, but the main concern is widespread smoke and haze through Tuesday. Highs will rise steadily—from the upper 70s Sunday to near 90° by Tuesday—before a stronger cold front brings the next chance for rain and thunderstorms midweek.
Smoke will be more concentrated aloft but could mix to the surface, reducing visibility and affecting those with respiratory issues. Cities along and west of I-55, including Springfield and Bloomington, could see scattered storms late Tuesday, with increased rain chances (up to 70%) Wednesday and Thursday.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity if sensitive to air quality, and to prepare for changing conditions. Humidity levels will climb sharply after a stretch of cooler weather, adding to the discomfort.
More rounds of thunderstorms are expected by midweek, with the strongest activity possible Wednesday night. Additional updates and advisories may follow as conditions evolve.
