Chicago, Illinois – Drivers heading out early across parts of northern Illinois are being urged to slow down as lingering snow-covered and slick roads create hazardous travel conditions south of Interstate 80.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, scattered, wind-whipped snow showers continued through the pre-dawn hours, leaving behind localized slick spots on roadways. The greatest concern is near and south of I-80, particularly across the Illinois River and Kankakee River valleys, where untreated roads remain snow-covered in places.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise, but patchy slick spots may persist through the morning commute. Reduced visibility is possible at times where lingering snow showers or blowing snow develop, increasing the risk for sudden slowdowns and minor crashes.
Areas including Kankakee, Ottawa, Morris, Pontiac, and Gibson City are among those most likely to see lingering impacts. Illinois Department of Transportation cameras show snow-packed lanes in some locations, reinforcing the need for extra caution.
Motorists are encouraged to check road conditions before traveling, increase following distance, and avoid sudden braking. While no additional accumulation is expected, cold temperatures will limit melting early in the day.
Travel conditions should steadily improve later this morning, but drivers should remain alert for isolated slick spots until roads fully dry. Further updates will be issued if conditions change.
