Springfield, Illinois – Severe storms are developing across central and northern Illinois this evening, with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch now in effect through midnight, bringing the risk of damaging winds and hail.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 76 includes more than 40 counties across Illinois, including Sangamon, Peoria, Champaign, McLean, and La Salle counties. Major cities under the watch include Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur, along key corridors such as I-55, I-57, and I-74.

Storms moving through the region could produce wind gusts over 60 mph and hail capable of damaging vehicles, especially in stronger cells. The greatest threat will occur through the late evening hours as storms organize and track east across the state.

Drivers should be prepared for sudden downpours and reduced visibility, particularly during the evening commute. Localized power outages are possible if stronger wind gusts develop.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and stay weather aware. Have multiple ways to receive warnings as conditions can change quickly.

The severe weather threat will continue through midnight, with additional warnings likely as storms move across Illinois overnight.
