Springfield, IL — Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected across central and southeast Illinois today, with the most intense impacts forecast southeast of I-55 through 7 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, storms began forming as early as 7 a.m. west of I-55, bringing large hail as the primary morning risk. The threat will intensify and shift eastward by midday, with the greatest window for severe thunderstorms occurring between noon and 7 p.m. across areas like Champaign, Danville, Effingham, and surrounding communities.

Forecasters warn of damaging straight-line winds exceeding 60 mph, scattered large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Residents in the enhanced risk zone (highlighted in orange on NWS maps) should remain weather-aware and be prepared to act quickly if warnings are issued.

The Storm Prediction Center has increased the severe risk for southeast Illinois after adjusting the threat area eastward. This update includes higher probabilities of wind damage and tornado formation.
