Springfield, Illinois – Strong thunderstorms are expected to roll across central Illinois this afternoon, bringing gusty winds, isolated hail, and a risk for brief power outages from the Mississippi River east through the I-55 corridor.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a level 1 severe weather risk covers much of central Illinois today, with storms most likely to strike west of I-55 between 1 and 6 p.m., and east of I-55 from 3 to 8 p.m. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, and isolated hail smaller than a quarter is possible. Tornadoes are not expected.
Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Bloomington-Normal, Peoria, and Champaign may see downed limbs, difficult driving, and spotty outages, especially where storms hit hardest. Residents with outdoor plans are urged to stay weather aware and ready to take shelter if warnings are issued.
Travelers along I-55 and nearby highways should watch for sudden heavy rain and debris on roads. Those at parks or outdoor events should have an alternate shelter plan ready.
Storm chances should taper off tonight, but additional advisories are possible if new cells develop.
