Springfield, Ill. – Damaging thunderstorms are set to sweep across central Illinois this evening, with gusts topping 60 mph and a low risk of tornadoes, especially northwest of the Illinois River. Residents in Peoria, Springfield, and Bloomington should prepare for rapidly changing conditions as storms intensify by late afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service, the severe weather threat will peak Friday evening, July 11, before weakening overnight. Areas from Galesburg to Decatur are under the highest risk, with scattered wind damage possible and a 5% tornado chance in parts of Knox, Fulton, and Mason counties. Hail up to quarter size may accompany the strongest storms.
Motorists should avoid travel along I-55, I-74, and rural highways as downed trees and sudden wind shifts could create dangerous driving conditions. Power outages and minor flooding are possible in low-lying areas. The NWS advises keeping phones charged, monitoring weather apps, and having a safe room ready in case warnings are issued.
This is the region’s most significant severe threat in July so far, with impacts similar to recent Midwest summer storms. The risk of severe weather should diminish after midnight, but additional advisories may follow if new storms develop.
