Springfield, Illinois – Scattered thunderstorms are set to impact areas near and east of the I-57 corridor this afternoon, bringing a risk of severe weather and locally heavy downpours. Motorists along I-57 and communities including Champaign and Mattoon should prepare for sudden changes in visibility and ponding on roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms may develop from mid-afternoon through the evening, with the highest threat focused east of I-57. While much of central Illinois will see dry stretches, localized showers and thunderstorms could persist, especially south of I-72 near Decatur and Effingham through Sunday and Monday. Afternoon highs are expected to stay in the upper 80s to low 90s, with muggy conditions likely across the region.

Travelers on I-72 and U.S. Route 36 should be alert for rapidly changing weather, especially during the evening commute. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor weather alerts, and avoid flooded roads. With elevated humidity, it’s also important to stay hydrated and limit strenuous activity during peak heat hours.

Showers and storm chances continue daily into Wednesday, with the next round of stronger storms possible Tuesday night. More updates or advisories may be issued if conditions worsen, especially for areas repeatedly impacted by thunderstorms.
