Chicago, Illinois – A wetter and increasingly mild weather pattern is expected to develop across Illinois between Sunday, Feb. 8, and Thursday, Feb. 12, increasing the likelihood of snow and rain in the Chicago area.

According to the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, northern and central Illinois are included in an area with above-normal precipitation probabilities during the 6–10 day outlook period. Temperature outlooks also show a 60–80% chance of above-normal temperatures, signaling a shift toward milder conditions across much of the Midwest.

The combination of increased moisture and warming air raises the potential for mixed precipitation, particularly in northern Illinois. Snow is more likely during colder overnight and early morning hours, while rain or wet snow may develop during daytime warming. Periods of transition between snow and rain are possible as temperatures fluctuate near freezing.

Chicago’s location along Lake Michigan may influence precipitation at times, with lake-enhanced moisture contributing to periods of heavier precipitation depending on wind direction and temperature profiles. This could lead to localized differences in precipitation type and intensity across the metro area.

Rather than a single major storm system, the outlook suggests multiple chances for precipitation during the Feb. 8–12 period. These conditions may result in wet roadways, slush, reduced visibility, and localized ponding, particularly during morning and evening commutes. Young workers, students, and commuters may encounter changing travel conditions from day to day.

Forecasters emphasize that this outlook reflects large-scale weather patterns, not specific storm totals. Snowfall amounts, rainfall totals, and precise timing will become clearer as the forecast window approaches.

Residents are encouraged to monitor daily forecasts and updates from the National Weather Service for the latest information.
