Peoria, IL – A round of accumulating snow is expected to impact much of central and northern Illinois beginning Thursday afternoon, with slick travel conditions likely through midday Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Lincoln.

Forecasters predict 2 to 4 inches of snow for much of the region, with locally higher totals of 3 to 4 inches near Bloomington, Peoria, and La Salle. Areas along and north of the Interstate 74 corridor are most likely to see the heaviest accumulations, while lighter totals around 1 inch or less are forecast toward Springfield and Quincy.

Snow will begin overspreading the state from the northwest Thursday afternoon before tapering off by Friday midday. Roads may become snow-covered and slippery, especially during the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency reminded residents to stay alert for changing road and weather conditions. “Make sure you’re tied into your local National Weather Service office to monitor the latest forecasts,” the agency said, adding that drivers can use the Illinois Department of Transportation’s real-time road conditions map at gettingaroundillinois.com.

While snowfall amounts could still shift slightly north or south depending on the storm’s track, the National Weather Service cautioned travelers to prepare for hazardous driving conditions across much of central Illinois, including stretches of I-55, I-74, and I-57.
