Illinois wakes up to rattling windows and swirling snow as winter flexes its muscles across the Chicago metro. Flags snap sharply, light snow skitters across pavement, and strong west winds make it feel even colder than the teens on the thermometer.

As of Monday morning, a Wind Advisory remains in effect for Chicago and much of northeast Illinois. Gusts between 45 and 55 mph are expected through mid-afternoon, with even stronger bursts possible near the Indiana border and Lake Michigan shoreline. Light snow continues on and off, but the wind turns even minor accumulation into a visibility problem.

Blowing snow creates slick patches on untreated roads, especially bridges and overpasses. Travel along I-90, I-94, I-290, and Lake Shore Drive may slow quickly during bursts of snow. High-profile vehicles will feel the push of crosswinds, particularly during the late-morning commute.

Temperatures stay cold today, topping out near 24 degrees. Wind chills hover near zero at times, making prolonged outdoor exposure uncomfortable. Secure loose holiday decorations and trash bins before winds peak.

Conditions calm gradually Monday night as winds ease, though cold air lingers. Tuesday brings quieter weather with increasing clouds and highs near 29. By Wednesday, clouds thicken again with a renewed chance of snow late in the day and Wednesday night, just ahead of New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Day 2026 trends cold but dry, with highs near 20 and calmer conditions for holiday plans. Still, repeated freeze-thaw cycles and drifting snow may set the stage for slick spots during late-week travel.
