Champaign, IL – A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for much of central and eastern Illinois and parts of northwest Indiana, where a developing system could bring heavy snow, freezing rain, and hazardous travel from late Friday night through Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service offices in Lincoln and Chicago.

In Illinois, the alert includes Champaign, Vermilion, Piatt, Moultrie, Douglas, Coles, Shelby, Cumberland, Clark, and Effingham counties, while in Indiana it covers Benton, Jasper, and Newton counties.

Forecasters warn that snow totals may exceed 5 to 6 inches in some areas, with freezing rain and sleet possible further south, leading to slick roads and low visibility through the day Saturday. The mix of snow and ice could make travel very difficult, particularly on Interstates 57, 70, and 74 and along U.S. 36.

The heaviest precipitation is expected Saturday morning through evening, tapering late Saturday night. Motorists are urged to delay non-essential travel, prepare vehicles with winter supplies, and monitor forecasts for updates as the storm track and precipitation type become clearer.
