Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service in Chicago is warning of a hazardous holiday travel weekend across northern Illinois, with strong winds midweek and accumulating snow likely beginning late Friday night.

According to the agency’s early Tuesday update, a powerful cold front will sweep through the region Tuesday night, bringing wind gusts up to 55–60 mph Wednesday and sharply colder conditions. Temperatures will fall into the 30s with wind chills in the teens by Thanksgiving morning.

While Thanksgiving Day will be cold and blustery, forecasters are most concerned about the potential for widespread accumulating snow late Friday through Saturday. Current models show a 70% or greater chance of measurable snowfall, possibly continuing into Sunday. The system could produce noteworthy post-holiday travel impacts as snow covers major interstates and area roads.

The exact track and intensity of the storm remain uncertain, but residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for slippery travel conditions this weekend.

Drivers should also secure outdoor decorations and use caution in high-profile vehicles due to strong crosswinds Wednesday.
