Springfield, IL – Freezing rain is expected across central and east-central Illinois on Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for multiple counties, including Sangamon, Champaign, and Peoria.
According to the NWS in Lincoln, freezing rain will begin early Wednesday morning and continue through the evening, creating hazardous travel conditions. Light ice accumulations are expected, particularly on roads, bridges, and overpasses, making both the morning and evening commutes treacherous.
The advisory is in effect for different regions at varying times:
• Springfield, Decatur, and Champaign:6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday
• Charleston, Mattoon, and Shelbyville:6 a.m. to noon Wednesday
• Peoria, Bloomington, and Galesburg:Noon to midnight Wednesday
Motorists are advised to drive with caution, reduce speed, and allow extra travel time. Sidewalks, driveways, and stairs may also become icy, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
