Chicago, IL – Heavy rain on frozen ground is causing flooding concerns across the Chicago metropolitan area, prompting a Flood Advisory until 1 PM CST Friday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The advisory covers Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Lake counties, where up to half an inch of rain per hour is falling on frozen soil, preventing absorption and leading to standing water.

According to the NWS, urban areas with poor drainage, low-lying roads, and non-paved surfaces are at risk of minor flooding. Additionally, creeks and streams may overflow their banks, potentially impacting local travel and property.

Affected areas include:

Chicago, Aurora, Naperville, Elgin, Cicero, Arlington Heights, Evanston, Schaumburg, Bolingbrook, and Palatine.

Safety Recommendations:

• Avoid driving through flooded roads.

• Stay clear of creeks and streams that could rise suddenly.

• Use caution when walking near standing water, as it may hide hazards.
