CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A stretch of dry, mild fall weather ends this weekend as a storm system moves across central Illinois, bringing widespread showers and possible thunderstorms by Saturday evening. Gusty winds and periods of heavy rain could slow travel along I-57 and U.S. 45 during the height of the system.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, showers are likely Saturday afternoon, with a chance of thunder before sunset. Winds will increase from the southwest, with gusts reaching 25 mph during the day and near 30 mph Saturday night. While severe weather is not expected, brief downpours could reduce visibility and leave slick roadways for evening events or homecoming gatherings across Champaign County.

Rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch are likely before the system exits early Sunday. Skies will clear quickly, leading to a crisp and sunny day with highs in the lower 60s. Sunday’s calmer weather will be ideal for pumpkin patches, outdoor sports, and fall park visits after the wet start to the weekend.

The new week begins with sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures, reaching near 70°F by Monday. Tuesday stays pleasant and dry before another slight chance of midweek showers.

Residents should secure lightweight decorations and plan accordingly for breezy, wet conditions late Saturday. The second half of the weekend, however, will deliver the kind of blue-sky autumn day perfect for outdoor plans.
