Chicago, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana should brace for dense fog and reduced visibility starting after midnight, especially south of I-80, with the greatest impacts expected during the Thursday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, fog will develop between midnight and 9 a.m. CDT Thursday, blanketing areas from Joliet to Rensselaer. Visibility could drop below one mile, particularly in southern sections of the metro area and into northwest Indiana, increasing the risk of travel delays and minor accidents.

Morning commuters along I-55, I-57, and I-65 are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra following distance. Patchy fog is also possible farther north, including in Chicago, Rockford, and Waukegan, but the most hazardous conditions are expected south of the I-80 corridor.

This is the second major fog event of May for the region, following a similar advisory earlier this month that caused numerous traffic slowdowns near Kankakee and Gary.

Conditions are expected to improve by late morning, but travelers should monitor updates from the NWS and local DOTs as additional advisories may be issued.
