Illinois Weather Alert: Dangerous Heat and Severe Storm Risk Thursday, July 24th — Cooling Centers Open in Chicago

Chicago, Illinois – An intense summer heat wave will push heat indices above 105° in Cook County Thursday, July 24th, followed by the return of potentially severe storms during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday through 10 p.m. Thursday across Central, North, and South Cook County, including Chicago. Highs on Thursday will peak near 97°F with heat indices reaching 107°F. Thunderstorms are likely after 1 p.m., some of which could bring torrential rainfall and damaging wind gusts. Afternoon travel along I-290 and Lake Shore Drive could be disrupted.

Storm activity will increase after 4 p.m. Thursday, especially along the Wisconsin border and expanding southward. Residents should avoid outdoor activities, drink plenty of fluids, and use public cooling centers. Chicagoans can call 311 for service checks or shelter information.

By Friday, rain and thunderstorm chances remain at 60%, continuing through Saturday with flash flooding possible in low-lying areas. The weekend will remain muggy, with highs in the mid-80s and off-and-on storms. Some brief dry breaks are expected Sunday.

  • Sunday: Mostly sunny, near 84°F. Low: 72°F
  • Monday: Partly cloudy, high 84°F, evening storms possible
  • Tuesday: Cooler, high 77°F, drier air moving in
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny, high near 80°F
  • Thursday (July 29): Mostly clear and pleasant, highs near 82°F

Warnings remain in effect through Thursday night. Expect more advisories if storms intensify.
