Chicago, Illinois – Light snow developing late this afternoon is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across parts of northern Illinois, particularly on untreated roads.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, a few hours of light snow are forecast from late this afternoon into the early evening. While accumulation is expected to be limited, snowfall could coat roadways and reduce visibility during the evening commute.

Forecasters said snowfall totals are expected to reach up to one inch in some areas. The highest likelihood for winter travel impacts extends northeast of a Rockford-to-Rensselaer line, including the Chicago metro area and nearby communities.

The National Weather Service cautioned that even minor snowfall can lead to slick driving conditions, especially on bridges, ramps, and secondary roads that may remain untreated. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and check road conditions before departing.

In addition to Tuesday’s snowfall, snow chances return again on Wednesday, though accumulations are again expected to remain light. Despite limited totals, forecasters note that travel impacts are possible both days due to timing and cold temperatures.

High temperatures Tuesday are expected to range from 23 to 27 degrees, with lows dropping to 22 to 26 degrees overnight. Wednesday brings breezy conditions, with highs near 29 to 35 degrees and overnight lows falling to 5 to 16 degrees.

Looking ahead, seasonably cold weather is expected to continue into the end of the week, with highs generally in the 20s to low 30s.

Commuters, students, and evening travelers should plan for slower travel later today and tonight as snow-covered roads develop.
