Chicago, Illinois – Travelers across northern Illinois should prepare for a wet and stormy Thursday morning as showers and thunderstorms move into the region. Drivers using I-90 and other major routes around Chicago could face slick pavement and reduced visibility during peak hours.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances increase after midnight Wednesday, with thunderstorms most likely between 4 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday. Gusty winds up to 15 mph may also make morning commutes slower. Officials urge drivers to allow extra travel time and avoid standing water on city streets.

The storm system will clear by late Thursday, bringing partly sunny skies and a high near 75. Cooler, drier air will follow Friday, setting up a stretch of mild weather heading into Labor Day weekend. Chicagoans can expect highs in the upper 60s to low 70s with sunny skies dominating Saturday through Monday.

Those heading out of town should still remain alert Thursday morning, but conditions look favorable for safe travel across the state beginning Friday. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the clear weather to prepare for holiday gatherings or outdoor events.

The calmer pattern is expected to hold through early next week, with no major hazards in sight. Additional updates will be issued if new advisories develop.
