Springfield, Illinois – Central Illinois residents should brace for dangerous heat this weekend and into early next week, with heat index values peaking between 100 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit from Saturday through Tuesday. This extreme heat poses a major risk of heat-related illness, especially for those without adequate protection.

According to the US National Weather Service Central Illinois, afternoon heat index values will climb significantly, offering only minimal overnight relief as temperatures dip to the mid-70s. The National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, issued these warnings at 3:58 AM CDT on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

Cities across the region, including Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, and Springfield, are expected to experience the most severe conditions. On Sunday, Springfield’s heat index could reach 105°F, while Bloomington and Champaign may see similar highs. Residents are advised to drink plenty of water, avoid outdoor activities between 11 AM and 7 PM, wear light-colored clothing, and stay in air-conditioned spaces, particularly during the day. This heat wave is similar to the prolonged hot spell experienced in the region during the summer of 2023.

Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday, with authorities monitoring conditions closely for any necessary updates or additional advisories.
