Springfield, Illinois – A significant winter storm is set to disrupt much of central and southeastern Illinois starting Saturday afternoon, bringing heavy snowfall that could make travel very difficult through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday night for a wide swath of the state, including Springfield, Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, Mattoon, Effingham, and Danville. Snow is expected to develop around midday Saturday and intensify through the afternoon and evening hours.
Most of central and east-central Illinois can expect 5 to 10 inches of snow, while areas south of Interstate 70, including Effingham, Flora, and Lawrenceville, could see totals climb to 10 to 12 inches. Snow-covered roads will become increasingly hazardous Saturday evening, with conditions worsening again Sunday as north winds gust between 20 and 25 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow.
Major routes such as I-55, I-57, I-70, and U.S. 36 are likely to be impacted, particularly during periods of heavier snowfall and reduced visibility. Officials urge drivers to delay travel if possible and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions.
Snow is expected to taper off Sunday night, but lingering slick roads and reduced visibility may continue into early next week. Additional advisories remain possible as the storm evolves.
