Springfield, Illinois – A rapid warm-up into the upper 70s is underway across central Illinois, but a sharp temperature drop is set to follow within hours by early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, highs will steadily climb through the weekend, reaching between 70 and 80 degrees from Friday through Sunday. Cities including Springfield, Peoria, Champaign, and Decatur will see dry conditions with less than a 15 percent chance of rain, making for favorable travel and outdoor plans along I-55 and I-72.

The warmest day arrives Sunday, when highs peak near 80 degrees across much of the region. However, this springlike stretch will end quickly as a strong cold front moves in late Sunday.

By Monday, temperatures drop significantly, with daytime highs falling into the upper 40s to low 50s. Overnight lows could dip into the low 30s by early Monday morning and again into Tuesday, raising concerns for a potential freeze in some areas.

Residents should prepare for the quick shift by protecting sensitive plants and adjusting plans for colder conditions. More updates are expected as the timing of the cold front becomes clearer.
