Springfield, Illinois – Waves of showers and thunderstorms are set to hit central Illinois starting today, with repeated rounds and wind gusts up to 35 mph disrupting travel and outdoor plans through the end of the workweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storm chances climb to 80 percent beginning Tuesday and continue through at least Thursday, with additional chances lingering into Friday. Wind gusts between 30 and 35 mph are expected across much of the region, adding to hazardous driving conditions during periods of heavy rain.

Cities including Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, Decatur, and Champaign will see multiple rounds of storms, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Roads such as I-55, I-72, and I-74 could experience reduced visibility and ponding water, particularly during heavier downpours.

Temperatures will remain mild, ranging from the mid-70s to near 80 degrees today before briefly cooling into the 50s and 60s Wednesday, then warming again later in the week.

Residents should plan for daily interruptions from rain, keep devices charged, and avoid flooded roadways during heavier storms.

Unsettled conditions will persist through the weekend, and additional advisories may be issued as each round of storms develops.
