Springfield, Illinois – Drivers and residents across central and southeastern Illinois could face rapidly developing severe storms this afternoon as a line of thunderstorms strengthens along a cold front and pushes east through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms are expected to form in west-central Illinois during the mid-afternoon and move east between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday. The primary concern is widespread damaging wind gusts that could approach 75 mph, strong enough to knock down trees and power lines.
The highest storm intensity is expected across southeastern Illinois, including communities near Effingham, Olney, and Mattoon, where the region falls within a Level 3 “Enhanced” severe risk. Areas farther north, including Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur, remain in a Level 2 risk, meaning scattered severe storms remain possible.
A few embedded tornadoes may develop within the storm line as it moves east. Meteorologists also warn that brief heavy rain could produce localized street flooding, particularly in urban areas.
Travel along major routes such as Interstate 55, Interstate 57, Interstate 70, and Interstate 74 could become hazardous during the evening as storms produce sudden wind bursts and heavy rainfall.
Residents are urged to monitor weather alerts through the afternoon and evening, secure outdoor items, and have multiple ways to receive warnings if severe storms intensify. Additional watches or warnings may be issued as storms organize later today.
