Springfield, Illinois – Evening plans across central Illinois could be disrupted as strong to severe storms develop between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., bringing the threat of large hail and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the most active zone will set up southeast of a Taylorville to Hoopeston line, where storms may intensify during the early to mid-evening hours. Large hail, potentially up to golf ball size, and isolated damaging wind gusts are the primary concerns.
Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, and Danville could see rapidly changing conditions, especially along major routes like I-55, I-57, and I-72. Brief heavy rain and reduced visibility may impact the evening commute.
While the tornado risk remains low, it is not zero, meaning a brief spin-up cannot be ruled out in stronger storms.
Residents should stay weather-aware, have multiple ways to receive alerts, and be ready to move indoors quickly if warnings are issued. Outdoor activities should be adjusted ahead of the 6 p.m. start time.
Storms are expected to weaken later tonight, but additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve this evening.
