Chicago, Illinois – Rain sweeping across northern Illinois today could briefly mix with light snow this afternoon before a much stronger weather threat arrives late Thursday night with powerful winds capable of damaging trees and power lines.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, periods of rain will continue through Wednesday afternoon with temperatures falling through the day. Some locations across northern Illinois may see rain mix with or briefly change to light snow, though no accumulation is expected.
Attention then turns to a powerful wind event expected Thursday night through Friday afternoon, when gusts could reach around 45 mph with the potential to exceed 55 mph in some areas. The strongest winds are expected between roughly 6 a.m. and noon Friday, especially north of Interstate 80, including the Chicago metro area.
Cities such as Chicago, Waukegan, Elgin, and Joliet could see difficult travel conditions along Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and Lake Shore Drive, where crosswinds may impact high-profile vehicles. Strong gusts may also lead to tree damage, scattered power outages, and hazardous driving conditions.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture and loose objects before Thursday night and use caution when traveling during peak wind periods Friday morning.
Rain and snow chances may return this weekend before much colder air moves into Illinois early next week, potentially bringing a sharp temperature drop across the region.
