Rock Island, IL – A single spark could race across dry grasslands this afternoon as wind gusts approach 40 mph across the Quad Cities region.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from noon until 6 p.m. CST Friday for portions of southeastern Iowa, western Illinois and northeast Missouri. Southwest to west winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. Relative humidity will fall to around 20 percent, while temperatures climb into the middle and upper 60s. Dry vegetation across the region will allow any fire to ignite and spread rapidly.
Communities including Davenport, Bettendorf, Muscatine, Rock Island, Moline, Galesburg and Burlington face the highest risk during peak heating this afternoon. Along Interstate 80, Interstate 74 and rural highways in Henry, Mercer and Warren counties, roadside fires could expand quickly under strong crosswinds.
Officials strongly advise against outdoor burning. Secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass and dispose of cigarettes properly to prevent accidental ignitions.
The Red Flag Warning expires at 6 p.m., but fire crews will monitor conditions closely through early evening as winds gradually ease.
