Quad Cities, Illinois – Strong wind gusts up to 40 mph could push any grassfire out of control within minutes across parts of west central Illinois and northeast Missouri by late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for Hancock and McDonough counties in Illinois and Scotland and Clark counties in Missouri. Southwest winds will range from 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 18 percent amid dry winter vegetation.

Communities including Macomb, Carthage, Kahoka and Memphis face the highest risk, especially in open fields and along U.S. 61, U.S. 136 and Highway 15 where crosswinds could drive flames quickly across roadways. Dry grasses and crop residue remain highly receptive to ignition.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and delay any activity that could produce sparks, including welding or brush clearing. Secure trailer chains and properly dispose of cigarettes to prevent roadside fires.

Fire danger will gradually ease after sunset as winds diminish, but conditions remain critical through 8 p.m. Additional advisories may follow if dry weather persists.
