Springfield, IL – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving grass fire by midday as strong winds and critically dry air overspread central Illinois through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon until 6 p.m. CST Friday for Knox, Peoria, Tazewell, Woodford, Fulton, Mason, Cass, Menard, Scott, Morgan, Logan, Sangamon and surrounding counties. Southwest winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 20 percent, and 10-hour fuel moisture levels are below 9 percent, creating conditions primed for rapid fire growth.
Across the region, open fields and grassy areas from Peoria to Springfield and west toward Jacksonville face the highest risk. Along Interstate 55 near Springfield and Interstate 74 near Peoria, roadside fires could spread quickly if ignited. Agricultural burns and debris fires pose particular concern during the afternoon peak heating hours.
Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning. Residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass and properly discard cigarettes.
The Red Flag Warning expires at 6 p.m., but fire crews remain on alert for any flare-ups during the late afternoon. Additional advisories could be issued if winds remain elevated into the evening.
