Princeton, Illinois – Rapid flash flooding is developing across parts of north-central Illinois tonight after thunderstorms dumped more than 2 inches of rain in just one hour, prompting an emergency warning for Bureau County.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for Bureau County until midnight CDT as thunderstorms continue producing intense rainfall capable of overwhelming drainage systems and waterways.

Radar estimates show heavy rain falling across communities including Princeton, Spring Valley, DePue, Hennepin, Ladd, Wyanet, Tiskilwa, and Dalzell, where creeks, low-lying roads, and drainage areas could flood quickly. Smaller towns such as Buda, Cherry, Malden, Arlington, Dover, Hollowayville, and Seatonville may also experience sudden water rises.

Flooding could impact key travel routes including Interstate 80 between mile markers 44 and 72 and Interstate 180 between mile markers 7 and 13, where water may rapidly collect on roadways or underpasses during heavier downpours.

Emergency officials warn drivers to turn around when encountering flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Residents in low-lying areas or near creeks should be prepared to move to higher ground if water levels rise quickly.

The flash flooding threat will continue through midnight tonight, and additional warnings may be issued if storms continue producing heavy rainfall across Bureau County.
