Chicago, IL – Thick gray skies and light snowflakes are spreading across northern Illinois this morning as the region braces for the season’s first measurable winter storm, expected to drop 2 to 4 inches of snow through midnight. Forecasters warn that travel could deteriorate quickly after 2 p.m., with slippery roads and reduced visibility across the I-80 and I-55 corridors.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 2 p.m. to midnight, covering Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, and surrounding counties. Light snow will intensify through the afternoon, turning heavy at times south of Interstate 80 where locally higher totals are possible. Commuters should anticipate hazardous road conditions, particularly during the evening rush, as snow accumulates on untreated surfaces.

Temperatures will hover near 30°F, then drop into the low 20s by early Tuesday, allowing patchy ice and refreeze to develop. The combination of new snow, gusty winds, and plunging wind chills will make Tuesday morning travel slow and slick, especially for early commuters and delivery routes.

By Tuesday afternoon, skies will begin to clear, but the cold remains — highs near 27°F and a biting northwest breeze will keep any melt minimal. The chill deepens Wednesday and Thursday, with highs struggling to reach the upper teens and lows dipping into the single digits across the suburbs.

Looking toward the weekend, forecasters expect a brief warm-up to the low 30s, followed by another chance for light snow Friday night into Saturday, signaling that winter has fully arrived across the Midwest.

Plan extra travel time, slow down on bridges and ramps, and keep emergency gear in your vehicle as the snow moves in. How are road conditions looking in your neighborhood? Share updates below.
