CHICAGO — The National Weather Service in Chicago warns that a period of wind-whipped snow will impact the Wednesday morning commute along and north of Interstate 80, producing low visibility, slippery roads, and brief hazardous travel conditions between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. CST.

Forecasters say light snow and gusty northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph will accompany the passage of a cold front, leading to patchy blowing snow and slush-covered roadways. Though snow accumulations are expected to remain light—generally a dusting up to around half an inch—conditions may deteriorate quickly where heavier bursts occur.

Localized lake-effect snow may bring slightly higher totals—up to one inch—near the Illinois lakeshore and into northwest Indiana. Reduced visibility will be the main concern, particularly on elevated and exposed roadways.

Commuters using I-80, I-55, and I-94 are advised to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and maintain safe following distances. The brief but intense nature of the snow bands could create rapidly changing conditions, especially during the midmorning hours.

After 1 p.m., winds will gradually ease, and visibility should improve as the snow exits the region. However, any untreated or slushy surfaces may refreeze overnight as temperatures drop below freezing.

The weather service reminds travelers to check conditions before heading out and to keep winter safety kits in their vehicles.

Forecasters expect calmer, colder weather to return tonight, with highs remaining in the lower 30s.
