Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service Chicago is warning residents to prepare for accumulating snow and dangerous cold as an early winter pattern strengthens across northern Illinois through the weekend. Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches of snow are possible beginning Thursday evening, followed by plunging temperatures and sub-zero wind chills by Saturday morning.

According to Wednesday’s forecast update, highs will drop into the 20s and low 30s Thursday, with snow showers likely overnight and early Friday, particularly north of I-80. By Friday night into Saturday, temperatures are expected to fall into the single digits, with wind chills ranging from –10° to –25°.

“Bitterly cold air will settle in behind the snow system, marking one of the coldest stretches of the season so far,” meteorologists said. “Fluffy snow will add to travel hazards as visibility and traction decrease.”

The weather service cautions that icy roads and reduced visibility could impact both Friday morning and Saturday travel, especially across the Rockford to Waukegan corridor. Residents are urged to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Drivers should monitor weather.gov/chicago and local alerts for evolving travel conditions through the weekend.
