Chicago, Illinois – Light snow is expected to affect parts of eastern Illinois and central Indiana on Wednesday and Thursday, with accumulation potential lingering near the 1-inch mark in and around Chicago, Kankakee, and Indianapolis, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

In a Tuesday update, IEMA said snowfall is expected in parts of the state, though measurable accumulation is mainly limited to eastern counties. Areas farther west are expected to see little to no accumulation during this period.

A probability map shared with the update shows the highest chances for at least 1 inch of snow stretching from northeastern Illinois into north-central and eastern Indiana, including the Chicago metro area, Kankakee County, and the Indianapolis region. Confidence decreases farther west across central and western Illinois, where snow chances drop off significantly.

While snowfall totals are expected to remain modest, slick roads are possible, particularly during periods of steadier snow and during overnight or early morning hours when temperatures are colder. Even light accumulation could affect travel on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.

Following the midweek snow chances, a much colder air mass is expected to move in for the weekend, with IEMA describing the upcoming cold as “bone-chilling.” Residents are encouraged to begin winter preparations now, including checking vehicles, ensuring adequate home heating, and planning ahead for travel.

The agency emphasized taking winter preparedness steps early to avoid disruptions, noting that preparation can help prevent problems at home, at work, or on the road as colder conditions intensify later this week.

Travelers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and road conditions, especially if driving between Illinois and Indiana during the midweek period.

Additional updates will be issued as confidence in snowfall placement and cold impacts increases.
