Coal City, IL – VFW St. Juvin Post 1336 will mark a historic milestone on March 21, 2025, celebrating 100 years of serving local veterans and the community. Established in 1925 by World War I veterans, the post remains an active nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring military service and fostering community engagement.

St. Juvin Post was named after a small village in northeastern France, where U.S. troops engaged German forces in October 1918. During the battle, as many as 84% of the U.S. 326th Infantry Regiment were killed, wounded, or went missing. The surviving soldiers, committed to remembering their fallen comrades, founded the post to carry on their legacy of service.

According to Post Commander James R. Phillips Sr., the post continues to thrive thanks to strong community support. Fundraising events such as Buddy Poppy Distributions and raffles help sustain key programs, including high school scholarships, the Annual Patriot Pen Essay Program, and maintaining the Community Veterans Memorial. The post also oversees flag programs for POW/MIA remembrance and the Veterans Blanket Program, ensuring ongoing recognition of those who served.

Despite declining membership, the post remains active in advocating for veterans. Local residents are encouraged to visit the Community Veterans Memorial on Route 113 near Coal City Intermediate School, where names of those who served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and more recent conflicts are displayed.

VFW St. Juvin Post 1336 invites the community to join its centennial celebration in 2025, recognizing a century of dedication to veterans and their families.
