Joliet, IL – A section of southbound Interstate 55 near the Interstate 80 interchange will close temporarily overnight Monday, affecting traffic between Jefferson Street (US 52) and I-80.
According to I-80 Will, the closure begins at 9 p.m. on Monday, March 31, weather permitting, and is expected to last until 6 a.m. Tuesday, April 1. At least one southbound lane will remain open during the work, and northbound I-55 traffic will not be impacted.
The temporary lane reductions are required to support the ongoing replacement of the I-55 ramp to eastbound I-80, as well as reconstruction work on the I-80 bridges spanning I-55. These improvements are part of the larger I-80 Will project aimed at modernizing critical infrastructure in Will County.
Drivers should prepare for overnight delays and consider alternate routes or plan extra travel time. The Illinois Department of Transportation advises motorists to use caution when traveling through the work zone.
This closure is part of a broader effort to rebuild and improve a key freight and commuter corridor. For real-time updates, travelers can check IDOT’s traveler information system or follow I-80 Will on social media.
