Joliet, IL – Drivers traveling through the Joliet area next week should prepare for overnight closures on Interstate 55 at Interstate 80 as part of an ongoing bridge reconstruction project.
According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, full closures in both directions of I-55 at I-80 will take place over three consecutive nights beginning Monday, July 7, weather permitting. The closures, which affect areas in Joliet, Channahon and Shorewood, are necessary to safely install steel beams on the I-80 bridge over the I-55 expressway.
The scheduled closures and detours will occur Monday through Wednesday night, July 7–9. Key traffic impacts include:
- Starting at 8 p.m., both directions of I-80 will be reduced to one lane between River Road and Houbolt Road.
- At 9 p.m., northbound and southbound I-55 will be reduced to one lane between Illinois 59 and U.S. 6.
- At 11 p.m., the westbound I-80 ramp to southbound I-55 will close.
- At midnight, the eastbound I-80 ramp to northbound I-55 will close.
- Between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., both directions of I-55 will be fully closed at I-80.
During the full closures, detours will reroute:
- Northbound I-55 traffic via eastbound I-80 to northbound Houbolt Road, reentering westbound I-80 to reach I-55.
- Southbound I-55 traffic via westbound I-80 to southbound Ridge Road, reentering eastbound I-80 to reach I-55.
One lane in each direction of I-55 will reopen by 5 a.m. daily, with all lanes and ramps fully reopening by 6 a.m. each morning. Work is expected to conclude by 6 a.m. Thursday, July 10.
