Carlyle, IL – Drivers in Clinton County should prepare for significant traffic delays this month as two major road projects are set to impact travel in and around Trenton.

According to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Highway 160 from Court Road to Highline Road is scheduled to reopen no later than Wednesday, August 13, at 12 a.m. The sheriff’s office urges motorists to use caution in the area, as shoulder work and other final touches may still be underway even after reopening.

A larger and longer disruption will begin Monday, August 18, when the Illinois Department of Transportation closes U.S. Highway 50 between Illinois Route 160 (Trenton) and Summerfield Road. The closure is expected to last four to six weeks. Westbound drivers will be detoured onto Illinois 160 south, then west onto U.S. Old Route 50 before rejoining U.S. 50. Eastbound motorists will follow the reverse route.

Officials warn that the closure will likely cause heavy congestion and delays in Trenton and surrounding areas. “Please be patient, plan ahead, and drive cautiously while taking this detour,” Sheriff Dan Travous said in the release. Travelers are encouraged to consider Illinois Route 161 as an alternate route to avoid delays.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for travel and stay alert for workers and detour signs in the area during the duration of the projects.
