PONTOON BEACH, IL – Drivers in Madison County should prepare for delays as a major ramp closure begins next week. The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the ramp from eastbound Interstate 270 to southbound Illinois 111 will fully close on Tuesday, Sept. 9, weather permitting.

According to IDOT, the closure is expected to last about 14 days as crews continue the ongoing I-270/Illinois 111 interchange reconstruction project. The closure comes in addition to the existing shutdown of Illinois 111 at I-270.

During the closure, motorists will be detoured onto eastbound I-270 to southbound I-255, then westbound Illinois 162 back to Illinois 111. IDOT anticipates the entire interchange project will be completed by the end of October.

Transportation officials are urging drivers to allow extra travel time, reduce speed in construction areas, and remain alert for changing conditions. They also stressed the importance of obeying posted signage and avoiding mobile device use while navigating the work zone.

Motorists traveling through the Pontoon Beach area should expect congestion, particularly during peak hours, and are encouraged to consider alternate routes when possible.

For additional updates on District 8 construction, IDOT recommends following their official social media channels or using the traveler information map at gettingaroundillinois.com.
