Mt. Vernon, IL – Drivers in southern Illinois are facing major delays Thursday after a semi crash led to the closure of a key stretch of Interstate 57 northbound.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the northbound lanes of I-57 between the North split, just north of Mt. Vernon, and the Dix exit are closed for hazardous material cleanup. The crash occurred overnight, and crews remain on scene Thursday morning.
Officials said the closure is expected to last for “some time” as specialized cleanup teams work to clear the site. Authorities emphasized there is no threat to the public, but drivers are being directed to use alternate routes.
The affected area is a heavily traveled corridor that connects Jefferson County motorists to larger hubs, including St. Louis to the west and Chicago to the north. Traffic backups are expected throughout the morning and possibly into the afternoon.
Residents and commuters are urged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time. The Sheriff’s Office has not released an estimated reopening time for I-57.
