Chicago, IL – Severe weather threats are increasing across Illinois this afternoon and evening as the National Weather Service has expanded Tornado Watch No. 643, now covering more than 50 counties statewide through 9 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail as strong thunderstorms move across central and southern Illinois. The watch was issued at 3:45 p.m. EST and includes a wide stretch of the state from Alexander County near the Kentucky border to Livingston, McLean, and Champaign counties in central Illinois.

Counties under the watch include Jackson, Williamson, Franklin, Jefferson, Marion, Effingham, Macon, Vermilion, Champaign, Montgomery, Randolph, Union, Saline, White, Wayne, and Massac, among many others. The affected region spans southern, central, and portions of eastern Illinois, impacting communities near St. Louis, Metro East, Champaign-Urbana, Decatur, and Carbondale.

Forecasters warn that storms may intensify rapidly, especially during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts closely, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop, but it does not mean one has been confirmed. Tornado warnings, however, indicate immediate danger and require urgent action.

Drivers should remain alert for sudden visibility drops and debris on roadways, while residents in mobile homes are urged to identify safer shelter options ahead of time.
